Understanding the Tunisia Health Declaration




 The Tunisia Health Declaration Form is an electronic travel screening required for all foreign tourists who wish to enter Tunisia. This document is required to help at least prevent the spread of Middle East respiratory Syndrome (or MRS), a deadly disease that has swept through Europe and the Middle East. This form should be electronically signed and printed out. It can also be handed to a health authority upon arrival in Tunisia. It is a good idea to review your health statement before you travel to this North African country. 


 This form is basically a two-page form that asks for basic information about your health history. Although it doesn't ask for the same information that the health application for citizens of the European Union or American tourists, it provides enough information to help you plan your trip. Specifically, it asks for information regarding your nationality (Tunisia is multicultural, so all Tunisian nationals are required to fill out the form), date of birth, passport type, country of citizenship, intended destination, and contact numbers for emergency health care. A licensed travel doctor will examine your form. Your doctor will examine your form and provide you with a medical examination certificate. 


 Tunisia has several hospitals located in different areas. However, all foreign patients who seek treatment must first go through the Ministries of Health to have their health declaration reviewed and approved before they can be admitted. Although the review process is not required, most visitors to Tunisia must go through it before they are admitted. If a patient's health information is not current or incomplete, some hospitals may refuse to admit them.  Passports are required for any tourist wishing to stay in Tunisia, even though the process is not difficult. There are other items that are not necessary, such as your contact information and a copy or your travel insurance policy. It is important to remember that all travellers are required to produce an identity card, called an i-card, at check-in. The card is valid for up 3 days after it is issued. There are a few consignment shops in Tunisia where you can pick up your visa and passport upon arrival. 


 The Tunisia Health Declaration provides general information regarding the security and welfare conditions in Tunisia. It does not provide details about the treatment offered by either the government or private health care system. It doesn't provide details about the qualifications of nurses or doctors, nor what standards they must meet. Nor does it detail the laws that govern the practice of medicine. As you would expect, if you have any health issues that might require you to receive treatment by an independent practitioner, you will need to visit the relevant Ministry of Health to secure a referral.
